How to stop nail biting while you work

Most nail biting happens on autopilot: reading, waiting for a page to load, on a video call. You cannot stop a habit you do not notice, so the first step is catching it the moment it starts.

Why nail biting is so hard to stop

Nail biting (onychophagia) is one of the most common body-focused repetitive behaviors. It is usually triggered by boredom, focus or stress rather than a conscious choice, which is why willpower and bitter nail polish often fail: by the time you notice, you have already been biting for a while.

Awareness comes first

Habit reversal training, the best-studied behavioral approach for BFRBs, starts with awareness training: learning to notice the urge and the movement early. Once you notice reliably, you can swap in a competing response, like making a loose fist or holding a stress ball, until the urge passes.

How Habitron helps

Habitron uses your webcam to watch for your hand moving toward your mouth. When it gets there, it beeps. If your hand stays, the beeps get longer, and after a while a gentle "Hey, kindly stop" message appears. All processing happens on your device; nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Tips that work well alongside it

Keep your nails short and filed so there are no edges to pick at. Keep your hands busy during calls with a fidget toy. Notice which situations trigger you most, and turn Habitron on for those first.
